How do I publish metadata in the Geodata Portal?

Publish metadata in the Geodata Portal

Metadata, produced according to current standards can be published, made accessible for searching, in the Geodata Portal.

To publish metadata it is required that you are registered as publisher for your organisation. Please contact the support to register as publisher.

There are various possibilities to publish metadata:

  • via an editing tool
  • up-loading of XML-files via web-forms
  • via a harvest function

All methods imply that metadata - administered within the organization - are made accessible for searching in the Geodata Portal.

The choice of method is optional.

Below there is a more detailed description of the different methods of publishing metatdata:

Publishing metadata via the editing tool

The editing tool creates metadata. The tool also includes a function to publish metadata directly to the Geodata Portal via Catalogue Service for the Web - Transaction (CSW-T).

Publishing metadata via web-forms

Metadata, created within the environment of an authority, can be up-loaded to the Geodata Portal via a web-form. The metadata read by the web-form can be created in a tool within the authority, or via the editing tool or via other editors for metadata that meet the standard.

Publishing metadata via the harvest function

Via a Web Accessible Folder (WAF) metadata can be copied to an accessible web site within the authority. Thereafter the Geodata Portal can read the WAF at regular intervals, for example once a week, and import and publish metadata to the Geodata Portal.

The authority can also have a catalogue service, following the specification Catalogue Service for the Web (CSW) which the Geodata Portal can harvest. Please contact the support to publish via harvesting with CSW.

CSW is the sustainable solution to harvest metadata. Though the specifications for CSW are yet not distinct enough, which make the specifications look differently. Therefore it is, for the time being, recommended to use WAF.
